BARANGAY, derived from the Malay word "balangay" or "balanghai", is a large swift boat which the early Malay immigrants from the Malay Peninsula and Archipelago used to travel to the Philippines. Measuring at least eighty feet in length, a barangay could carry thirty to sixty people; the word eventually came to mean a family or clan. Today the word has come to mean a district or neighborhood. In the same sense, Barangay Dance Company is a family of immigrants and American-born, of the young and the young-at- heart bound together by a common interest in Philippine folk dancing and music.

Ethnic Dance Festival 

Barangay Dance Company is a San Francisco-based Filipino Folk dance organization whose mission is to preserve the rich Filipino cultural heritage through the arts of Philippine folk dancing and music. Through presenting, outreach and research of Philippine folk dance and music, Barangay endeavors to promote awareness, understanding and appreciation of the Filipino culture within the communities it serves.
RECENT EVENTS

Barangay Dance Company and the American Center of Philippine Arts students perform Singkil at the Philippine Heritage Celebration on June 12, 2001 at San Francisco's City Hall Rotunda.  The event, attended by community leaders and international dignitaries, was sponsored by the Philippine Consulate and the San Francisco-Manila Sister City Committee chaired by Dennis Normandy. 

Barangay Dance Company begins its free community workshop on Philippine dance the first Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 PM at Corpus Christi Church in San Francisco.  For more information, contact info@barangay.org.

Barangay Rondalla Ensemble practices Sundays from 11AM to 1 PM in San Francisco.  If you would like to learn to play the bandurria, laud or octavina, contact info@barangay.org.

Barangay Dance Company presented Tausug, choreographed by former Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company artist Jay Loyola, during the 33rd Annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts' Novellus Theater June 24-26, 2011.
